Reminder to Self: Create

I don’t know why I keep learning this lesson the hard way, so I’m writing this out as a gentle reminder to my future self.

An overhead view of a person sitting at a loom with a colourful project on it

When you come home from work exhausted,
Create something.

When you have nothing left in your tank and just want to sit on the couch and have a glass of wine and doom scroll,
Sit down at your loom.

When you are people-d out and your social battery is in the negative numbers,
Turn off your phone and make something.

When anxiety is high and you feel responsible to fix all things for all people,
Pull out your spinning wheel, some wool, and a little Rose Betts, or acoustic Arkells, or Kacey Musgraves.

When you resent all the energy you have to give to others and want to run away to a cabin in the middle of nowhere with no internet or cell signal or humans,
Grab the half-finished knitting project beside your spot on the couch.

When your mind is over-active and you can’t sleep again,
Just get up and weave for 10 minutes.

When you feel grief,
Pick the colours for your next project and write about why you picked them.

When you feel hurt,
Thread the loom.

When you start to worry about what someone thinks about you,
Ply that ugly pink and purple wool into some funky art yarn that looks cool in the end.

When you have no ideas,
Stop thinking about it and just make something.

When you read the news and feel like the world is ending,
Make something.
